I was looking at some of my photographs stored in an old shoebox and I came across this one I took of the Lambretta I used to have back in the summer of 1985. For anyone interested, the model is a 1965 GT200. I wish I still had that scooter as they are worth a fortune now.
I realised that in the background is the entrance to what I think was the Esso Oil Storage facility in St Michaels Road. One of the entrances to The Priory is just to the right of here on the other side of the railway bridge. There is student accommodation on the site now. I have done a screen grab of Google maps to show how it looks now.
Update: I discover what happened to my old scooter
I was amazed to find my old scooter for sale on ebay in 2014. It still had exactly the same paint that it had had since I painted it in the winter of 1984. I was also amazed that the scooter that came into my possession in 1984 (by exchanging a Vespa I paid £50 for) sold for £5,600! A photo from the ebay sale is shown below:
Then in 2017, I discovered my old scooter had a new lease of life, as a racing Lambretta!
The scooter must have been tuned by JB Tuning as it appears in this Youtube video (12 seconds in):
I think my scooter finally met its maker (Innocenti) shortly after it was raced. It was 52 years of age.
What a fabulous site! I spent my first 25 years or so living in St Michaels Road opposite tesco car park, and some of the posts here are truly fascinating. Brilliant research…happy memories…
Hi Paul. I’m glad you enjoyed it, thanks.
